Schmidt, a Michigan resident, is a two-time Newberry Honor winner, a 2011 National Book Festival finalist, and is currently an English professor at Calvin College in Grand Rapids. Schmidt has authored “Okay for Now,” “Wednesday Wars,” “Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy,” “Trouble,” “First Boy,” and others. During his time with BPS students, he will combine stories and the writing process for middle and high school students.

 

Community Program

Schmidt will also present “The Role of the Writer for Today’s Young Readers” at the Baldwin Public Library on Tuesday, April 24, from 7-8 p.m. It will be a time of stories. Students will get an inside look at how stories do what they do: how they entertain and what they mean. Parents and students are invited to this program and reception. Free raffle tickets will be available at the door for a chance to win an autographed copy of a Schmidt book and a photo with the author. Books will be for sale by Book Beat. Program is appropriate for 4th-12th graders and parents.  Schmidt’s books  “Wednesday Wars,” “Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy,”are former  high-end read Battle Books.
